WEDNESDAY 9 DECEMBER 7.30PM

We hope you will come along and enjoy your fellow birdwatchers' company, and have a go in one of our light-hearted quizzes (not all on birdy themes).

We will have our usual raffle, so it will be good if you can bring along and donate a prize as well as some cash for your raffle tickets.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

WEDNESDAY 11 NOVEMBER : ON THE TRAIL OF THE CRANE

Our next meeting has Ralph and Brenda Todd talking about Cranes:

On the Trail of the Crane – part 1 - A journey through Europe

"For many years this is a family of birds we have found to be most interesting and enigmatic. That they live in some wonderful areas of the world is an added bonus. Of the 15 species in the world we have seen and photographed 11 but what experiences they have given us. In this first part we take a brief look at the crane family and some of the conservation issues that surround them. For the most part however we shall take an in depth look at the Eurasian (common) Crane which breeds in Northern Scandinavia. We have followed its fortunes on its migration route from Extremadura in Spain, through Northern France into Sweden where they congregate to fulfil their courtship ritual and dances and finally into Finland where its success depends on the vast wilderness areas to be found there.

We shall also touch on the history and future of Cranes in England.

We hope to show that by following the fortunes of just one species we can enjoy a whole range of other wildlife, particularly birds, and some rather pleasant places to stay on route".

Venue: Kennington WI Hall, Faversham Road, Ashford
Time: 19:30

Entrance fee includes coffee/tea and biscuits.

New members very welcome.

OUR NEXT MEETING WEDNESDAY 14TH OCTOBER: Crossing Boundaries

Crossing Boundaries. Rolf Williams
A unique story of birds and people on the high seas of Iraq.

Rolf Williams served in the Royal Navy. Join him in a dramatic story of unfolding human and wildlife drama in the dangerous waters of the North Arabian Gulf.
When the flagship’s deck fills with migrating birds Rolf is ‘ordered’ to an Iraqi oil platform ten miles out at sea to witness an avian spectacle - thousands of birds are on the move. With no plants at all, and not a song to be heard, will you be able to identify the dizzying variety of species he has photographed for you? Find out where the birds are coming from and going to and what happens when they drop into this politically charged environment.
