January 21st  The reintroduction of Choughs to Kent by Suzanne Kynaston from Wildwood Trust's Education Dept 

February 18th Birding in Kent, a video diary, by Nick Smith.

March 18th The Wild Sea is my Home by Andre Farrar

April 15th To be arranged, members suggestions welcomed.

We also plan to have outdoor field meetings, details will be sent about 2 weeks prior to the walk, with a reminder 1 week beforehand.

Indoor Talks 2024/25

2024

18th Sept.  Wildlife in Estonia with Paul Hale - Estonia wildlife in spring and autumn intermixed with Estonian customs, We explore the Old Town of Talin and discover the origins of the Christmas Tree. Ural Owls, Black Woodpecker and breeding Slavonian Grebe are among the species we look at. Paul is a popular speaker and we welcome him back.

A short AGM will be held this afternoon.

16th Oct.  The Blean Woods and it’s Wildlife with Michael Walter - Michael was RSPB warden of the Blean woods for many years and still takes an active interest in them. He has a comprehensive knowledge of the birds, butterflies and plants, as well as the history of the woodlands. He has spoken to us previously on the river Stour.

20th Nov.  PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF SPEAKER. An introduction to Senegal, West Africa with Gill Hollamby - an introduction to the birds and wildlife of Senegal following a visit last January. It almost surrounds the Gambia but has many birds not found there. 

             

15th Jan.  Hothfield Heathlands with Ian Rickards, KWT Warden - An update on an area many of us visit quite frequently, which is undergoing some changes. Ian will explain the plan to us, as we welcome him to our club.

This is planned as a social event - more details in November

19th Feb.  The wonders of Migration with Andre Farrar - Andre looks at the amazing ways birds migrate. He was with the RSPB for many years and is Chairman of the Kent Ornithological Society.

19th March. Worth Marshes, the recreation wetlands with Vicki Paeple - Vicki works for the RSPB at Worth Marches, so is well able to talk about this large site taken over by the RSPB in recent years. Following an interesting walk there last August  it will be good to see some of the changes being made to encourage more birds to the wetland.

16th April. A short history of the ABWC followed by a look at How migration monitoring has changed. by Gill Hollamby

September 13th   Saving Nature in Kent and Essex by Alan Johnson RSPB regional manager for the area.

A short AGM will be held this evening.
October 11th    Birds on Lanzarote and Fuertaventura, by Paul Hale
November 8th    What’s in a Name? by Clive Nuttman.

Meetings will be on Zoom
January 10th   South Africa and Kruger National Park by Rob Wharton
February 21st   A Talk on Costa Rica - by Andrew Lapworth, an update on Costa Rica after a recent trip to different regions of the country. Note change of date
March 13th The Birds of Paradise by Ray Hale A trip to Raja Ampat, Papua, Indonesia in search of the Birds and Butterflies. An illustrated talk on this fascinating country and its birds.

Birds have a similar range of senses to us - vision, hearing, taste, touch, smell - but often with different sensitivity and the information from the suite of senses is collated and interpreted in the brain. The senses are called upon when birds undertake migration, this will be discussed.
